I had still not found the direction I wanted to go for this project. I was still figuring out the whole idea that would make the process. All that I have here is that I want to use data and emojis in some way. The form that my thesis will take is a book. I would like to include a section that emphasizes the research on the differences between male and female emoji use, as well as the purpose behind the book’s creation. There will be a section introducing the new visual language that explains each symbol, with examples of how they might be used. There would be spreads with the given sentence on the left side and the recorded responses on the right to showcase side by-side translations. In the later section of the book, I’m considering including infographics with the results. With this there could also be a poster series, there could be posters relating to the translations of the emojis, as well as posters exploring their potential meanings and use cases.

I am also considering interactive motion design pieces. These could be short animations

showing how a sentence is translated into the emoji language, possibly contrasting male and female interpretations. It could involve translations from text to symbol or illustrate what the symbols can represent. If certain patterns or unique symbol usages emerge, they can be highlighted in these animations. Depending on the timeline, I may also attempt animated data visualizations to represent the endings, like visually mapping the frequency of specific symbols used by gender. Along with this comes the more distant idea is the possible incorporation of AR elements in the booklets to bring the motion pieces to life.

Finally, this one is a very distant possibility, but I’ve considered a website sort of thing where

there could be an interactive exploration of the translations. Viewers could hover or click on different symbols to see how participants of different genders translated specific words or phrases. This is definitely a more distant possibility considering the rest of the workload.

2: Delivery Schedule

On a separate page, provide a schedule for completion, keeping in mind that the final form
will be due on December 7. Break down what you will need to accomplish each week in order to have the project complete by the 7th.

open for the delivery schedule!

Sep 26, 2024 — Finalize Project Plan

  • Decide on the forms the project will take (e.g., posters, booklet, motion pieces).

  • Finish planning out the timeline and tasks.

  • Look at mood board and add to it…

Oct 3, 2024 — First Design Drafts

  • Sketch out what I want for the imagined final product.

  • begin initial drafts of the emoji/visual language.

  • Search into what sort of style is relevant…

  • Consider mood-board and visual style goal…

  • Color themes, layouts, etc…

  • Make a list of everyone I want / willing to participate in this (translation wise).

Oct 10, 2024 — Midterm Review & Revisions

  • Make sure the blog is fully updated!!!

  • Make revisions to the rest designs based on the rest review… continue planniing symbols.

  • Begin working on book layout, deciding on size, font, etc.

Oct 17, 2024 — Second Revisions

  • Complete symbols…

  • Once symbols are complete, plan out the sentences that are going to be translated (can not be before because I don’t want it to inadvertently affect the icons).

  • Ask everyone to give me the translated results and start applying them to example translations. Begin organizing content for book.

  • Continue working on book…

  • Maybe cutting down what research to include.

Oct 24–Nov 7, 2024 — Design Production Stages 1-3

Oct 24:

  • Continue book,

  • Now that the emoji language is done, it can be put into the book with explanations.

  • Research section in book outlining the purpose of the project.

  • Begin working on additional pieces at this time.

    • Beginning motion sequences for the project.

    • Thumb-nailing poster ideas.

    • Maybe moving posters!

Oct 31:

  • Continue with the second half of the book, which compares the translations (o of gender).

  • With relevant information, create a sort of infographic that goes over the translation results.

  • Go over the results in written form as well.

  • Rework depending on crits.

Nov 7:

  • All final designs should be completed by now.

    • Book

    • Posters

    • motion

  • Etc… (edit later depending on ideas).

  • Rework depending on past crits.

Nov 21, 2024 - Final Feedback

  • Get final crit during class.

  • Make final tweaks to all visual elements depending on crits.

  • Begin preparing presentation?

Dec 5, 2024: Final Presentation

  • Have a presentation prepared for the class.

  • Have all materials and items prepared to showcase the final product.

Dec 12, 2024: Blog Final Post

  • Have the final blog updated with the full process and result of the project.

  • Make sure everything has been updated properly by week

  • Maybe write a blog post summarizing the entire project, adding onto the process and outcomes.

The New Thesis Idea

My thesis will explore how different genders interpret a new visual language made of emojis or pictographs. I aim to discover how men and women might use these symbols differently to express written sentences. To do this, I’ll create a new emoji language and have both male and female participants translate given sentences into this language. Then, I'll compare the results to see if there are notable differences between genders.

I’ve read several journal articles highlighting how men and women perceive, understand, and express themselves with emojis differently. For example, women tend to send more emojis at a time than men. Another study showed that gender can influence how a person interprets the meaning of emojis.

Using sentences that can be translated into various emojis without a single obvious choice

  • I am going to the store

  • Today was a good day.

  • I saw something interesting.

  • I met someone new.

  • I have something to do.

  • It’s finally over.

  • I got a message.

  • I need to make a decision.

  • I'm feeling something different
